Beginning The Process

The first step to receiving Special Education services or Section 504 accommodations is a referral, or a written request for an evaluation of the student. This can be made at any time by anyone, including parents, guardians, surrogate parents, school personnel, physicians, social workers, or other individuals with parental permission.

If you suspect that your child may have a disability or impairment, please contact the Student Services Department at your child’s school.

504 vs IEP: What Support Does My Child Need?

Ledyard Public Schools will support you in determining the best possible services and accommodations for your student's unique circumstances. The information below is provided for a general overview of how the process works and possible options based on the results of your student's evaluation.

Section 504 Accommodations

Students with impairments that affect or limit certain life activities may qualify for a 504 plan. A 504 plan modifies a student’s regular education program in a regular classroom setting and is monitored by their teacher.

Individualized Education Program (IEP)

An Individualized Education Plan is created for each student who qualifies for special education supports and services within their public school district. IEPs are delivered and monitored by special education staff.

Ledyard Public Schools is committed to maintaining the highest level of student confidentiality. In Connecticut, special education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Parents and eligible students have the right to access their education records, including special education records, and control who can access them. To share information, written consent from the parent or eligible student is generally required. Contact Student Services for more information.
