FMLA- Family Medical Leave Act

FMLA Fact Sheet

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides certain employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. It also requires that their group health benefits be maintained during the leave.

FMLA is designed to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by allowing them to take reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons. It also seeks to accommodate the legitimate interests of employers and promote equal employment opportunity for men and women.

Connecticut Family and Medical Leave Act (CT FMLA) and Connecticut Paid Leave (CT Paid Leave), effective 10/01/2025.

These only affect Ledyard Public Schools (District) employees whose positions do not require a certification under Chapter 166 of the Connecticut General Statutes.

District Employees (such as teachers and administrators) whose positions do require a certification under Chapter 166 “certified employees”  are not covered under these two state laws.

Key provisions of CT FMLA and CT Paid Leave are summarized below:

CT Paid Leave (Partial Income Replacement)

  • Eligible employees may apply for partial income replacement when they need leave for certain qualifying reasons, including CT FMLA-qualifying reasons and/or addressing issues related to family violence or sexual assault.

  • CT Paid Leave provides up to 12 weeks of partial income replacement in a 12-month period.

  • Eligible employees apply directly to the CT Paid Leave Authority, which makes determinations regarding approval or denial, and benefit calculations as appropriate.

  • The CT Paid Leave Program is funded by mandatory employee contributions.  As such, beginning with the first payroll on or after October 1, 2025, the District will deduct and withhold from wages a mandatory 0.5% contribution from noncertified employees’ paychecks. This deduction is mandatory and cannot be waived. It will be shown on your paystub as CTPL.

CT FMLA (Job-Protected Leave)

  • Eligible employees may take job-protected, unpaid leave for certain qualifying reasons, including personal and family medical-related reasons.

  • Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of leave in the 12-month entitlement period, with up to two (2) additional weeks of leave available for a serious health condition resulting in incapacitation that occurs during pregnancy, and up to 26 weeks if caring for a covered family member with a serious injury or illness incurred on active duty in the Armed Forces.

  • CT FMLA will run concurrently with Federal FMLA, when applicable.
