Winter Update

As the new semester begins, the National Honor Society winds up to full charge. Not only is the society complete with both junior and senior members looking for projects to lead, the second half of the year is always the busiest season for NHS. At the time of the last newsletter update, Ledyard High School was just headed into Christmas vacation, and lots of activities have occurred since, as well as many future events to look forward to!

Before beginning anything else, NHS does not want to forget those affected by the Hurricane Sandy before break. Amber Coombe has agreed to undertake a project called Schools Adopting Schools, and planning for this will soon be finished and the fundraiser for another school affected by the hurricane will be announced. Meanwhile, the annual Toy Drive, arguably one of the most fun of the fundraisers NHS sponsors, was a fantastic success. Not only did toys come marching in from all morning meetings, generous monetary donations allowed a crew of NHS members to go shopping and purchase even more gifts for local families.

Of course, the National Honor Society has remained active in much more than just the publicized school-wide fundraisers. Whether it was Kayla Fowler's Bone Marrow Drive to expose eligible donors to the process for joining the donor list, assisting at the concession stands for wrestling matches, selling tickets and ushering at the Anne Frank drama production, helping at Ledyard Youth League events, or providing babysitting at local activities, NHS members were always in the community doing their best to live out their motto of service.

But NHS does not rest because of exhaustion after a few midterm exams. Duncan Maxwell intends to begin the penny drive for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society on February 15th and continue it until Friday, March 15th, so start saving up your spare change! (It wouldn't hurt to check under the cushions on the couch as well.)

On another, more musical note, the next coffee house will not be held until Thursday, March 7th, at 7:00. We expect a great deal of talent and a fun time with peers. For now, just post the date on your calendar, as NHS stays busy in other aspects of the Colonel community.
