SAT-PSAT-ACT Testing

All Test dates and registration information is available at www.collegeboard.com or www.actstudent.org .

PSAT
The PSAT is administered once a year in October. It is open to all Juniors and Sophomores. Juniors taking the PSAT are eligible for the National Merit Scholarships. Students register for the PSAT in the School Counseling and Guidance office following an assembly that describes the test.

ACT vs. SAT: Which Test Should You Choose?

SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests
Testing is an important part of the college application process. Although it certainly does not replace the value of a student’s transcript, the college will use the scores as one of their tools in deciding college acceptance. Most 4-year colleges require that an applicant take the SAT Reasoning Test as part of the application process. Some more competitive schools also require the SAT Subject Tests.  SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests are both offered several different times in a year and you may retake them as often as you like. Visit www.collegeboard.com and talk with your school counselor to get more information.

ACT
The ACT is comprised of four tests: English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning. There is also an optional Writing section. All registration information, test dates and locations are available on the ACT web site www.actstudent.org. LHS offers an ACT test date in June of each year.

SENDING SCORES
Students are responsible for sending all score information to the school of their choice. The collegeboard offers “Score Choice” which allows students to opt in to a policy allowing them to select which scores colleges receive. Please visit www.collegeboard.com/scstudent or www.actstudent.org for more information about sending scores.

TEST PREPARATION (Prep Courses)
Many resources are available for test preparation. Reference materials can be found in the guidance office and in our school library media center.  Most public libraries also have test prep materials. Resources are available for purchase in most bookstores as well. There are tips and practice tests as well as computer software available. Ledyard High School provides two SAT PREP course opportunities. In the fall, Princeton Review offers a prep course at LHS preceding our November test date. Please visit http://www.princetonreview.com/college/sat-psat-test-preparation.aspx  for more information. In the spring, LHS faculty run a prep course before our May test date. These are all excellent ways to prepare for college testing but the best advice we can offer is for you to take challenging courses, prepare well for them and read, read, read!

TOEFL
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures the ability of non-native English speakers to communicate in English in an academic setting. It accurately measures how well students can read, listen, speak and write in English in the college or university classroom. Please visit www.ets.org/toefl to register.
