Ms. Park's Procedures
Vocabulary development is approached through the Wordly Wise program. At the beginning of each week, I will guide your pronunciation of the list under study. It is posted on the school website link to my name. Looking up the words in a good dictionary (print or online) and thesaurus is required. Synonym.com is good because it offers definition, synonym, and antonym. A dictionary with etymology is best, and I will ask etymology questions about words on the list with asterisks.
The students who have achieved the most success with Wordly Wise have made flashcards for each list. The card should look something like the following; let’s use “taciturn” as a sample word.
Taciturn (adj.) – habitually reserved and uncommunicative
Syn.: reticent
Ant.: voluble
Ety.: Latin; tacitus (silent)
Zach’s taciturn nature became problematic in the discussion-driven class.
You should have definition(s), part(s) of speech, synonyms, antonyms, etymology, and a sample sentence.
You have all week to ask me for assistance.
Expect a quiz at the end of each week. Types of questions will vary.
Beyond the weekly quizzes, there will be a Wordly Wise section on the final exam with words chosen more or less equally from the lists. You will receive a study guide in advance of the final exam.
Tip:
Don’t throw away the list or flashcards before the final exam. Keep track of the words you miss on the quizzes and study them again.
