Course Overview (rev. 8/11)
English 1133 is a survey of American literature from Puritan times to the mid-twentieth century.
Literature: The primary text is The Bedford Anthology of American Literature, a two-volume chronological survey of American writers from the Puritan era to modern times. Expect to also gain exposure to American history, music, and film as we approach the works as part of the Humanities. Your enthusiasm for learning and positive attitude will make the class something we all look forward to each time we meet.
Composition: The writing is usually related to what we're reading for class. You can expect writing support through revision of early drafts. I will provide edits designed to help you strengthen your weak areas; your final grade on writing assignments can be improved greatly through this process. You will write a term paper.
Vocabulary and Grammar: We will work on expanding your vocabulary through a daily “word of the day” selected from a list of words frequently seen on the SAT exam. You will be quizzed on them every ten days. Likewise, we will work periodically on exercises designed to sharpen your grammar, usage, and mechanics skills.
Participation: Participation is 10% of your grade each quarter. You are required to come to class on time, prepared to learn, with all necessary materials. Participation is handled on the 0 or 100 model. You start each day with 100 points. Ways to lose them: unexcused tardiness, sleeping in class, coming in empty-handed, abusing the lavatory pass, or becoming an impediment to everyone’s learning through class disruption. At midterm and the end of the quarter, your 0’s and 100’s are averaged to determine your participation average.
Please bring daily: an open mind, a positive attitude, a desire to learn, courtesy for me and your classmates and the following: pens, pencils, highlighter, a binder with paper and your text or any handouts I've given you. A flash drive of your own will also be very helpful when we use the computer lab.
Turnitin.com: Using this website is a requirement for all major writing assignments. A separate handout on its use will follow.
Standard for written work: Hard copies must be MLA formatted (handout to follow) on white paper with black ink. You are responsible for printing your own work; it cannot be submitted electronically.
Late work: Please take note on how your quarterly grades are calculated. Late work is subject to a ten point per school day deduction. Work is not accepted via e mail.
Absences: When legitimately absent, you are allowed the same number of absent days (without penalty) to submit work when you return to school. This includes making up quizzes and tests. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Ask a classmate for notes; you may e mail me for assignments or check PowerSchool.
Extra help: I am available for extra help, but you must let me know in advance when to expect you.
Here is how your quarterly grades will be calculated:
