Course Overview (rev. 3/10)

English 1132 is a chronological survey of American literature and philosophy from Puritan times through the mid-twentieth century.  You will read essays, sermons, epistles, novels, plays, poems, short stories, and excerpts from memoirs and autobiographies.  You will also watch American film of the twentieth century.

Goals:  In addition to the goals that LHS has for you, you will be able to identify various authors' philosophies and styles and articulate (orally and in writing) how their work reflected America as it was then or would become.

Requirements:

  • Independent study of Wordly Wise vocabulary lists.  At the beginning of each week you will receive a word list and exercises to complete on your own.  The answer key is available in Room 112 for your use, and you may ask me questions throughout the week.  There will be a quiz at the end of each week and a vocabulary section on your final exam.  Expect to be asked for etymology, usage, part(s) of speech, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms.
  • Challenging reading assignments
  • Tests or essays as unit assessments
  • Homework related to the works we read
  • Active verbal class participation

Expectations:  In addition to the expectations that LHS has for you, I expect the following from you:

  • active listening skills
  • critical thinking and articulation skills
  • willingness and desire to go beyond the minimum requirements
  • ability to keep up with challenging reading assignments
  • ability to seek and accept constructive criticism (including editing of your drafts)
  • willingness to participate in classroom discussion
  • an open mind
  • positive attendance patterns
  • punctuality
  • ability to meet deadlines

Format for written work:  MLA formatting is required on white paper with black ink.  Handouts will follow in class, and you may always use this website as a reference:
theowl.english.purdue.edu

Turnitin.com:  Using this website is a requirement for all major writing assignments.  A separate handout on its use will follow.

Late work:  Late work is subject to a ten-points-per-school day deduction. You will not be reminded about late work.  Late submission of work to turnitin.com will result in a five-point deduction for the assignment.  If you are having trouble getting the website to accept your paper, you must notify me via email at that time so that I have a time-stamped notification of the problem.

Absences:  When you have an excused absence you are allowed the same number of days to hand in your work or make up a quiz, test, or film without penalty.  This does not apply to the term paper or any other assignments given in advance.  Tests must be made up in a single “sitting.”  You may contact me any time at my e mail address: bpark@ledyard.net.  Ask a classmate for notes; you may e mail me for assignments or check PowerSchool.

Participation:  Each time that we have a class discussion I note on a spreadsheet who speaks and who does not.  At the end of the marking period I average the days you speak and the days you are silent.  Silence is not what I expect of a 1132 student.  Tardiness is also handled in this category.  You lose your points for the day if you have an unexcused tardy.  Being on time is a significant part of the school's social and civic expectations.

Extra help:  You may come in for extra help before class (with a pass), at lunch 1(with a pass), if your study and my prep. period coincide (with a pass), and after school if I know you are coming.  My prep is Block ____ and you can find me_______________________________.
