AP/UConn ECE Course Overview (rev. 6/11)
Ms. Park, Room 112 bpark@ledyard.net
Course description: English 1146 is designed and offered as an advanced placement course with the dual aim of meeting the standards of the College Board and the requirements of the University of Connecticut Early College Experience program. The course requires students, independently and with others, to critically read, respond to, interpret, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate a wide variety of challenging texts and become familiar with a variety of voices. As they engage in the process of writing with and against the text in question, each student will be expected to construct a reading that makes the text meaningful and in the process develop a voice of his or her own.
Academic Expectations:
Students and graduates of Ledyard High School will:
- Read and write critically and effectively for a variety of purposes
- Speak clearly and communicate ideas accurately in a variety of settings
- Employ problem-solving skills effectively
- Employ effective research and study skills
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills
Literature: Students will read and reread world literature from antiquity to present day, including plays, novels, short stories, essays, and poems. Staying current with the reading is essential to success because it informs class discussion and journal entries and papers. Film will also be studied on a limited basis.
Journal: Students are required to keep a journal to respond with a focus to the readings and ideas discussed in class. Journals are collected and graded twice per quarter and must reflect MLA format (see the owl@purdue.edu for formatting reference).
Drafts and Papers: All drafts and papers must be processed with MLA format. Students are not permitted to miss class time because they are printing the work outside the classroom; this will result in lost points for lateness.
Turnitin.com: Submission of journals, drafts, and papers to turnitin.com is required. Students must also hand in a printed copy (e mail submissions will not be accepted). Details will follow in class.
Late work: Late work is accepted with a reduction of twenty-five points per school day. Late submissions to turnitin.com are docked ten points; if students are having a submission problem (as in the website will not accept the paper), an email to bpark@ledyard.net must be submitted at that time as time-stamped proof of the attempt to avoid the ten-point loss.
Assessment:
MP1:
Summer project: 10%
Journals: 20%
Writing: 50% (drafts, finished papers, and timed writes)
Participation: 20% (active participation in class activities/discussion)
MP2:
Journals 20%
Participation 20% (as above)
Writing 60% (as above and includes the senior critique)
AP English Literature and Composition Exam: Everyday instruction will thoroughly support preparation for the exam, which is offered in May.
UConn Credit: Upon payment of tuition, students are eligible to earn four UConn credits in English 111 as long as a grade of C or better is earned and there has been no plagiarism.
Plagiarism: Students are accountable to both Ledyard High School's and the University of Connecticut's plagiarism policies. Details will follow in class; handouts are provided.
Tardiness and Absence: If students are tardy to class without an acceptable pass, they lose all participation points for the day. If it becomes a pattern of behavior, students will also face disciplinary action from the APO. Getting makeup work is the responsibility of the student. If students arrive after class has met or are dismissed before it meets, they are required to see Ms. Park when she is not teaching for any handouts. Simply emailing Ms. Park may not be adequate to stay current.
Teacher Availability: All students are welcome to come in for a chat or extra help as needed. I am often available in Room 112, but you need to let me know when to expect you. You can also reach me through e mail.
Alumni often tell me that this class was excellent preparation for their college English classes. The work will challenge you, but the potential rewards are significant. I hope that you will have an excellent experience! ~Ms. Park
