More Than Words Meeting Minutes

Connecticut College

I.  Icebreaker

III.  Review of 2008-09 Program Highlights

Participants from last year’s program explained the group’s history over the last three years. Group members also described the PowerPoint presentation that LHS students made to the high school faculty, Board of Education, and at freshman orientation.

IV.  More Than Words Mission and Goals

The group reviewed the minutes from the May 20, 2009 More Than Words workshop which was held at the Mashantucket Tribal Retreat facility in Pomfret, CT. Mike Graner read the program highlights from last year that were noted by students and he reviewed the mission statement and goals of the group.

The group was then separated into four sub groups, and each group was asked to develop a list of goals for this year.

V.  Lunch

Workshop Participants were invited to the Conn College dining facility to enjoy an outstanding lunch.  Following lunch the group did another icebreaker (fishy, fishy, come run to me).

VI.  Action Plans

Students and staff from New London High School met as a group the students and staff from LHS met as a group.  Participants from each school developed a set of action plans to promote the goals and ideas of More Than Words in their school.

New London High School

  • diversity dinner

Ledyard High School

  • Use video system (large-screen TV) in the cafeteria to display a slide show about More than Words program. Pictures of each participant identifying their ethnic background and two “points of pride” will be displayed each day in the cafeteria.

  • Finish the brochure by October 16.

The group was dismissed at 1:15 p.m. The Ledyard bus drove the New London students to New London High School and then continued to LHS.
