Morning Announcements - May 23, 2013

Bonfire
Looking for something to do Friday?  Join your class mates at the Student Congress Bonfire!  That’s right we are restoring a tradition by holding a bonfire at the Ledyard Fair Grounds from 8-10 pm.   All students are welcome with I.D.  See posters around the school for more information.

Freshman Car Wash
Spring cleaning – wash the winter off your car this Saturday at Kartway from 10-2 pm.  While you wait for your car indulge in sweets from the class bake sale.   Seniors stop in and get your car clean for the prom.  The cost is $5 per car and $7 for SUVs and trucks.  Thanks for sponsoring the freshman class!

Marching Band
All marching band students are to report to the band room Sunday, May 26, at 11am for the Ledyard Memorial Day Parade. Parade uniform is long khaki pants, blue band polo shirts, and sneakers/running shoes. For more information, see Mr.
Green.

One Book One Region
Meet Conor Grennan, author of Little Princes, Tuesday, May 28th, 6 PM @ Mystic Arts Center. Little Princes is our region's summer reading.

Coffee House
Who doesn’t like music? Come to the last NHS Coffee House of the year.  Bring a blanket to sit outside and listen to your friends perform.  Come to the courtyard at 7 pm on Thursday, May 23. Rain or shine.

Cupcakes and Causes
A big thank you to Bre Bedard for making us scrumptious cupcakes last night! We had an amazing discussion about the very complex problem of "opium brides." Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 3 at 7pm in the Media Center.

SCHOLARSHIPS
CT Water Pollution Abatement Association Seniors who reside in CT, will graduate in June 2013 and who plan to pursue an environmental curriculum at a college or university in the fall of 2013. Student must have a 3.0 out of 4 GPA.  Applications are available online at www.ctcwpaa.com and are due June 12.
The VIETCT Inc. Scholarship
High School Senior who is a Vietnamese descendant who will be going to an institution of higher learning.  Applications will be based on academic performance, extra-curriculum activities and the quality of the essays.
Scholarships can be obtained from www.vietct.org and must be postmarked by June 25. 

Walk 4 Wells
The YUGA Club is hosting a walk-a-thon to raise money for water and sanitation projects in developing countries. There will be relays and a 5k walk meant to simulate the average distance people walk for water in much of the world. There will be a little kids race, too. We'll have live, music, tees and face painting. The experience begins at 2:30 on June 1st at Preston Park pavilion. Registration should be done online at www.ledyardwalk4wells.com; it only takes a few seconds to register. To make life easier, we'll have a table at lunch beginning today with a laptop available for registration. If you pre-register this week, it's only  $5 ($7 next week). Freshman Girls Tennis

Summer Job
Part Time lifeguards needed for Groton Long Point beaches. Pay is $10 an hour. For more information, see Mr. Buonocore.

SCHOLARSHIP
LHS Music Booster Scholarship applications are now available in the Career Center. Any LHS senior who plans to pursue an interest in music in college and has demonstrated dedication and commitment to the LHS Music Program is welcome to apply.  ***Application deadline has been extended to Friday May 17th****  Applications are available in the Career Center and should be returned to Mr. Hammond, Mr. Green or Mr. Lambert.
Whitsons Culinary Group Scholarship - Any high school graduating senior student who is pursuing their education in Culinary Arts or Hospitality field.  Applications are available in the Career Center and are due Monday, May 20, 2013 to the Guidance Dept or Career Center.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP at General Dynamics –Juniors with drafting experience will be offered a summer employment work experience.  You will work side-by-side with experienced employees.  Applicants will be subject to a Security Investigation and employment physical that includes a mandatory drug screen.  If you are interested please see Mrs. Schwenk in the Career Center for information on how to apply.  This is a great opportunity!!
