Morning Announcements 2-9-10 A Day
NHS
During the month of February NHS will be holding a coin drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There will be collection boxes in your classrooms for donations. Also, during the last 2 weeks of February we will be selling paper pennies during both lunch waves.
Girls Tennis
Any girls interested in playing tennis should come to room 202 during activity period for a meeting.
GSA
Attention GSA members! You must see Ms. Shear by Thursday to pick up your field trip materials. The True Colors Conference is scheduled for Friday, March 12th. The cost for students is $35.
Sophomore Advisory
The sophomore class will be selling chances for $2 each for a chance to win an iPod touch during lunch in the cafeteria. The winner will be chosen on Friday, February 12th.

Penguin Plunge
Mark your calendars for a 12 pm plunge at Ocean Beach on February 28th. We are organizing a LHS team to raise money for the Special Olympics. We already have over a dozen crazy volunteers. In order to participate in the penguin plunge you must fill out the waiver. You must collect a minimum of $50 and record it on pledge form. Please submit both forms and money no later than February 22nd to room 211. Key Club will compile all of the waivers, pledge sheets, money, and then register us as a LHS group. Details of our meeting time, etc. will be available by February 22. All forms are available in room 211. Thank you!!!
Coaches Cook Off
The 1st Annual Coaches Cook Off to benefit the Matt Buriak Scholarship Fund will be on March 13th from 5-8 pm in the LHS Cafeteria. Coach Craig and Coach Zelinski will compete in a cook off and you will be the judge. Tickets are $5 each and include a sample from each cook and a drink. Tickets can be purchased from Coach Craig, Coach Zelinski, or Mike Brannan. Come and support your favorite coach.
Stop the Music
The Key Club is raising money for the Special Olympics. We will be playing the song "Party in the U.S.A." by Miley Cyrus all week during lunch. Only you can stop the music by making a donation at the Key Club table. The music will stop once donations reach $300.
CAREER CENTER
Three Rivers Project TLC (Technology Learning Community) – This program is designed for students in two-year associate degree programs in the fields of engineering technology. Students will be mentored by a technology advisor to ensure they make full use of various support services. Students will also participate in a paid summer institute to prepare for college in August 2010. Project TLC offers support to foster self confidence, and ultimately, to assure student success, as participants progress from the community college to either a four-year institution or the workplace. This program will benefit students who are on the fence regarding college. Perhaps they fill limited financially, academically or socially. There is no GPA requirement. This program is ideal for students who believe college is not an option for them or for first generation college students. Some of the technologies include – Architectural Design, Computer Sciences, Fire Technology and Administration, Laser & Fiber Optic. Construction Management, Manufacturing Engineering. Nuclear Engineering, Environmental, Civil Engineering and General Engineering Technologies. If you are interested please see the Career Center for more information.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Alpha Delta Kappa CT Zeta Scholarship – 2010 Graduating Senior Female entering college in the fall of 2010 who plans to major in Education. All applications need to be returned to the Guidance Office on for before Friday, March 26, 2010.
CT Association of Women Police, Inc. – 2010 Graduating Senior (Male or Female)
Who plans to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2010.
Associated General Contractors of CT, Inc. – 2010 graduating high school
Seniors entering a four-year building technology or civil engineering program as freshmen or entering a two-year technical school with a construction course of study, with the intent of entering a four-year college upon completion of the technical school. Application material must be submitted by March 31, 2010.
New London County Retired Teachers Assoc. – 2010 Graduating High School Senior from New London County who will be pursuing a teaching career. All applications must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2010.
Lauren Candler Memorial Scholarship – 2010 Graduating High School Senior who has at least 3 full credits in Chorus OR Agri-Science at the end of your senior year. Completed applications must be returned by April 19 to the Guidance Office.
Ledyard Historical Society Scholarship – 2010 Graduating High School Senior who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and/or participated in extracurricular activities. Must have at least 3 full credits in Social Studies, including US History I, II or AP US History and achieved a GPA of 3.0 or above in each of these courses. Applications must be returned to the Guidance Office by April 15, 2010.
Isidore Wise Scholarship – 2010 Graduating High School Senior who has been a former or current patient/student at Newington Children's Hospital, Connecticut Children's or the CCMC School. Completed applications are due by March 31, 2010. Applications are available online at www.connecticutchildrens.org Click on Support Us and then click Isidore Wise Scholarship
Shaw-Worth Humane Society Scholarship – 2010 Graduating High School Senior who has demonstrated achievements in animal protection. Documentation of the activities must be cited and future plans for humane work is required. Applications are in letter form and must be submitted by March 25, 2010.
Williams Memorial Institute Scholarship – 2010 Graduating senior who is a direct descendent of a Williams Memorial Institute Pre-1955 Alumna. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2010
Cynthia A. Carano Memorial Award - 2010 Graduating High School Senior who has been accepted to a 2 or 4 year college or Technical School apprenticeship. Selection will be based on a written essay and interview. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2010.
Amigos Club
Students interested in volunteering with the Amigos de las Americas program should attend a meeting at 5 pm on Monday, February 8th in room 211. Parents are encouraged to attend.
LHS Music
Congratulations to the following students on being selected to the 2010 Connecticut All State Music Festival: Kristen Campeta, Rahul Chandrsekaran, Kenny Dutton, Jessica Meyer, Rachelle Seney, Kendal Swan, Steve Strong, and Alex Zegarra for chorus. Rob Scott was selected for band.
